Engineering News 29th September 2015

When Harco completed machining it was discovered that the steam port faces of the cylinder block halves were  pitted. Two engineering solutions were made available to the Trust: 1. to machine out the affected faces and screw into place cast iron inserts or 2. have the repairs undertaken via cast iron welding. Upon advice the Trust opted for cast iron welding as the result would be two homogenous castings. The welding was undertaken by Shilton Cast Iron & Welding of Hinckley, Leicestershire; subsequently the castings have been returned to Harco of Brierley Hill for final machining and inspection.
